I would definitely recommend The Outsiders by S.E. It is a fairly short book that was easy to read. It also contains underage drinking and smoking. The book does contain some mild swearing (it’s not too bad). I would recommend this book for ages 10+. Hilton wrote this book when she was in high school and that perspective undoubtedly played into this. The plot is all wrapped up in one big bow which doesn’t seem realistic. Most members of each gang despise each other.Ī flaw with the book is that the solutions to the plot’s problems seemed simplistic. The relationship between the Greasers and the Socs is very strained. They are very protective and loving towards each other. All of the Greasers view each other as family members. The book also focuses on the relationships between the characters. And Darry is struggling with the responsibility of taking care of his younger brothers. For example, Ponyboy is an amazing student who feels like he is under immense pressure. They are all “real” people.Įveryone who reads this book can find at least one character they identify with. They are all their own individuals and have complex backstories. What makes The Outsiders such an amazing book is the characters and their relationships. It makes you feel like you are not alone and that other people are struggling with similar issues. Of course, there is nothing wrong with that type of book, but it was really nice to find a book that I could relate to. I think it’s very hard to find a book about teenagers that is about real teenagers, not unrealistic heroes that are facing problems that we never face. The problems discussed transcend time and are applicable to today’s teens.

The story is about social status, growing up, finding yourself, and rebellion.Īnyone in middle/high school can relate to this book in one way or another. The Socs are the rich, popular kids while the Greasers are the poor, bad kids. The book’s plot is about the rivalry between the Greasers and Socs (focusing on the Greasers). The editions are printed offset on premium Mohawk Via Vellum paper. The Outsiders is a beautiful coming of age story that I would recommend for everyone in middle school and high school. The Artist edition is signed by Jeff Echevarria. The Numbered and Lettered editions are signed by S.E. The text pages are set in Trivia and Lydian types. The signed limited edition of The Outsiders by S.E. In 1967, while she was still in high school, she published her first book, The Outsiders. Since its debut, the book has sold more than 15 million copies, become a steady feature on school reading lists, been adapted into a film by Francis Ford Coppola, and helped shape an entire literary genre marketed to young adults.Īs poignant and relevant today as the day it was first published, The Outsiders urges a divisive world to remember that, as Ponyboy says, we all “see the same sunset,” and that while we may be the ones who create great divides between each other, we can also be the ones to bridge them. Susan Eloise Hinton was born on July 22, 1950, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. As a result, it was a hit with young readers across the country. Her novel would present adolescent characters who were the opposite of everything a teenager, by adult standards, should be. Hinton felt that the required reading in school was not an honest reflection of the lives teenagers experienced in her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Hinton published The Outsiders in 1967 – a novel she began writing at age 15 and sold at 17 – the idea of a teenager writing fiction for her peers was practically unheard of. As tensions mount in a neighborhood war between the poor greasers and the rich Socs, Ponyboy grapples with the stereotypes placed upon him as he searches for his own identity and place in society.

For Ponyboy, life is a series of conflicts. The Outsiders tells the story of two weeks in the life of a teenage boy as he struggles to stay with his brothers, stay true to himself and “stay gold” following the death of his parents. Hinton in 1967, details the lives of a gang of 'greasers,' or young men from the wrong side of the tracks.

Hinton is the classic tale that revolutionized the young adult novel. The Outsiders, a young adult novel published by S.E.
